about meden - guidance...

We see the school as a community, which enables pupils, teaching and support staff to work together. School rules exist to permit a well-ordered purposeful atmosphere in school. Each tutor ensures that pupils understand these rules. A high standard of conduct in school, on the way to and from school and in public places is expected of all pupils.

Discipline

We are very keen that correct behaviour and good work should regularly be praised and rewarded. However, whilst we will always appeal to a pupil's inherent sense of what is right, we will not hesitate to enforce appropriate standards when necessary. We expect that parents will fully support us in our efforts to maintain standards. Pupils who behave inappropriately may be given extra tasks or made to work in isolation from the rest of the group. If a pupil is on report teachers will also be asked to comment on attitude and work rate at the end of each lesson.

The report will be discussed by the Tutor or Achievement Manager with the pupil at the end of the day and it may, when appropriate, form a means of regular communication with parents. The school has the right on certain occasions, to detain pupils at the end of the day for up to one hour, although at least 24 hours notice will be given to parents.

In extreme circumstances a pupil may be excluded from attending school in accordance with the Education Authority's procedure. The Meden is an inclusive school. We do not like to reject or isolate pupils. Our Student Support Centre works hard to help pupils with emotional and behavioural difficulties and reintegrate them back into mainstream classes as quickly as possible.

Co-operation

We encourage pupils to work, learn and grow together in an atmosphere of respect and co-operation. We have a clear Anti-Bullying Policy developed by pupils and staff. All pupils understand through P.S.E, Citizenship and tutorial programs, the harm that bullying does, and why it is unacceptable. Neither racist nor sexist attitudes are tolerated.

Rewards

We believe that the development of self-discipline requires encouragement and support. We are proud of our system whereby pupils are awarded credits and commendations for good work, service to the school and the community, outstanding personal achievement and success generally. We believe that only through reward and encouragement will pupils find self esteem and confidence in life.

Homework

All pupils of all ages are expected to do homework. Homework forms an important part of the education of our pupils. It helps them to make further progress in their subjects and to become more independent, self-disciplined and self-reliant. Pupils are given a pupil planner at the beginning of each term. In it they record their homework, their achievements and other information. It is a useful way for school and home to keep in contact. We hope that like us you will check that it is used.
