Governors, staff and pupils at Meden School and Technology College in Warsop were thrilled by the findings of their last Ofsted inspection, which confirmed Meden as ‘a good and improving school providing a high level of care’.
Reflecting upon an excellent report, which highlights how ‘standards are rising’ in a school with ‘very strong’ leadership and ‘clear educational direction’, the Head Teacher, Mr John Shaw, expressed his pleasure at the recognition of the school’s many strengths. “This report is something we are all very proud of. The school has made significant progress since our last Ofsted in 1997, through the hard work of everybody connected with the school. To have 67% of lessons judged ‘good’, ‘very good’ or ‘excellent’ is a remarkable achievement, but is a strong reflection of the high standards we have set ourselves.”
The report emphasises how the school ‘takes very good care of all its pupils’, stating that ‘procedures for child protection and ensuring pupils’ welfare are excellent’, the highest level of recognition Ofsted can give. Parental response during the inspection process confirms a high level of satisfaction with what the school offers, both within class and in the ‘very good range of additional activities’. Inspectors observed ‘very good’ behaviour, seeing ‘very good’ relationships as a ‘strength of the school’, creating a ‘purposeful working atmosphere’.
The school is ‘popular and oversubscribed’, with its Technology College status having a ‘significant effect’ in school improvement. In a separate report on sixth form provision at Meden, Ofsted reported that ‘the sixth form caters well for its students and provides a rich environment for their personal development.’ The quality of teaching is ‘good’ or better in most subjects. There was also praise for the level of assessment, support and guidance offered to students by sixth form leaders, tutors and teachers, with the result that the ‘achievement of many students is good’.
Students were described as benefiting from ‘a wide range of enrichment courses provided to widen students’ horizons. The majority of teaching was judged to be ‘good’, ‘very good’ or ‘excellent’.Chair of Governors, Mr David Munnings, expressed the governing body’s pride at the report’s findings. “The Governors are pleased that the school’s achievements have been recognised,” he said. “This is a well-deserved commendation for the hard work of staff and pupils alike.”
