Multi-lingual Students

We are delighted with the successes of the pupils who studied Modern Languages with us at Meden, whether up to GCSE level or beyond. Rebecca Bentley has just gained an upper second class degree in three languages ‘French, German and Spanish’ with distinctions in spoken German and Spanish. She was at Liverpool University for two years where she continued her studies of French and German and started Spanish from scratch. Rebecca’s third year was spent abroad.

Her first placement was in Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance with the aircraft and satellite building company “Dornier”. She then moved on to have six months at a Spanish university in Santiago de Compostela. After her final year in Liverpool Rebecca has completed her degree and we wish her well in developing an international career.

Matthew Jones studied science A levels at Meden and has just finished the second year of a computing course at Nottingham Trent. His third year will be spent with Siemens in Munich where his GCSE will be a good basis for him to develop his command of German. A fluent command of another language, particularly with a knowledge of the world of computers, will be very much an advantage when he comes to apply for jobs.

Ffion Elgie is working for an international company of accountants. She studied French and German for GCSE and continued with German, Maths and Economics to A level. She then took the very unusual step of studying Chinese from scratch at Durham along with Business Studies and had a year at the university in Beijing during her course.

Karen Somes left Meden in 1990 and went to Sheffield to do German and Business Studies. After graduating with a First Class degree Karen went to work for Ernst and Young ‘an international accountancy firm’ in Stuttgart and has developed her career with them, taking all her accountancy exams in German. Karen is getting married to a German colleague there this month and seems to have settled in Germany for good.
