community - technology college links...

What does it mean...

On Monday 22nd January 2001 David Blunkett, Secretary of the state for Education and Employment, announced the group of schools to be included in the Governments' specialist schools programme.

Meden was one of the 38 schools to be approved and became a Technology College in September 2001. This brought the total number of specialist schools in Nottinghamshire to 4.

As a specialist Technology we have to meet stringent targets for pupil achievement in return for increased resources for maths, science, technology and ICT. Meden is also expected to work even more closely with local primary and secondary schools to raise standards in specialist subjects. The community also benefits from the outreach programmes such as after school classes in ICT.

Meden worked towards gaining Technology status for three years and was eventually successful at the fourth attempt. The motto 'If at first you don't succeed.....' seemed to be appropriate in this case. The school raised over £50'000 from sponsors to qualify for DFEE approval and continues to develop these links with these sponsors and other local business in the community.

The success was based on the commitment of staff, persistence and the determination to help in the regeneration of Warsop and Mansfield area.
