A Walk around Warsop
These images were taken on a walk on the morning of 29th July 2002.

The entrance onto the Hills & Holes SSSI from Sookholme Lane. Although no
public footpaths cross this part of the site access is possible from Sookholme
Lane and from Stonebridge Lane. Please respect this protected area.
Sookholme Lane is an ancient route and the hedge on the right is probably one
of the oldest (and best!) in the district.
As we approach Hammerwater Bridge the tall hedgerow on the right is particularly
rich with many species of trees and shrubs.

way through the Hills & Holes.

Upstream from Hammerwater Bridge the River Meden passes beneath the railway
line.
As Sookholme Lane passes under the railway the views open up.

with the arable fields to the left
This old hedge bank on the southern side of Sookholme Lane contains woodland
species and is a fine habitat for birds.
Herrings Farm is the first of several farms along the lane. We turn right following
the stone wall.
Spring Lane descends down towards Sookholme Brook.

The banked lane continues, enclosed by tall hedges.
The view south-west towards Sookholme from the junction of Spring Lane with
Bully Lane.
Turn right and follow Bully Lane in this direction back towards the railway
- and don't keep Ebony waiting by admiring the view when you should be exercising
the dog!
Bully Lane passes beneath the railway.
Twenty years ago this section of Bully Lane was a broad lane with hedgerows
on either side. Beyond the hedgerow is Sookholme Moor.

... on to Carter Lane at Warsop Vale.
Turning right and following Carter Lane towards Church Warsop.

The restored settling ponds with the Rhein o'Thorns in the background - but
very unusally, no birds!

The Rhein o'Thorns is a part of the Hills & Holes Site of Special Scientific
Interest due to its plants - scabious, knapweed and rock rose are seen here.
Turning right from Carter Lane along the footpath to Stone Bridge.
The footpath passes though a Blackthorn tunnel and emerges into a section
of the Hills & Holes with its remarkable wildflower displays from spring
to autumn.

The path passes between tall hedgerows as we approach the River Meden at Stone
Bridge.

of the flatter sections of the Hills & Holes.
The original Stone Bridge was a packhorse bridge, its replacement is hardly
an object of beauty!
