Meden 6th form
This
is an exciting time at Meden if you are considering continuing your
education beyond 16. In September 2004 the new purpose built 6th
form centre will be completed. It will provide a comfortable and
excellent learning environment for current year 12 students and
future enrolements.
At Meden our sixth form numbers are growing as our courses widen
and the opportunities for further study increases. Indeed it is
fast becoming the norm to consider a continuation of study from
14 to 19 as courses you have started in Year 10 can progress and
expand into very useful avenues of study in Years 12 and 13.
We welcome students from other schools and colleges. We pride ourselves
in having an open sixth form and any student is most welcome to
apply for a place. Our local consortium arrangements with neighbouring
schools and West Nottinghamshire College now allows for a wide variation
of courses to be taken. You may be able to take one subject, for
example, at another school but still use The Meden as your main
base.

We
offer a wide range of activities and opportunities to enhance the
6th form experience including:
- Community Sports Leadership Award
- sports teams
- life saving training
- charity fundraising
- assisting with literacy and numeracy
- business dynamics course
- outdoor residential visit to Hagg farm
- higher education fair

Courses available:
- A & AS levels - AS level qualifications are achieved by
taking the first three units (called AS units) of an A-level course.
This takes a year. To progress to a full A-level requires a further
year of study, taking three further units called A2 units.
- GNVQ's (General National Vocational Qualifications) - These
allow you to start learning about a broad area of work, such as
business or health and social care, while continuing to develop
your key skills. Courses are available at three levels - Foundation,
Intermediate and Advanced.
Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)
The EMA scheme is an allowance for 16-19 year olds who continue
education beyond Year 11. It offers weekly payments to young people
to encourage them to participate and achieve in further education.
You qualify for payments dependent on your family's income. The
scheme is currently being piloted in certain areas of England but
in September 2004, the scheme will be run nationally. Some students
can earn up to £30 a week, including bonuses, as long as they
keep to their 'learning agreement' with their school or college.
