Drama at Meden

We are a lively, dedicated and exciting department working within and in support of the Expressive Arts Faculty which also includes Art, Dance and Music.

At the time of writing the lessons are taught by Mr. C. Collard, Ms. S. O’ Flynn, Mr. J. Gibson and Mrs. R. Ayliffe.  We have three well equipped studios, unsurprisingly known as Studio 1, 2 and 3 respectively!  Studio 1 (the smallest) is where Ms.O’Flynn likes to (and in fact does!) teach. It is the smallest of the three studios and it has a sprung wooden floor which cost £12,000 and useful mirrors down one wall. Studio 2 also has a sprung wooden floor (very suitable and intended for dance) plus a wall of mirrors, and this is where Mr. Collard, our Head of Department teaches. Lastly there is a carpeted area between the two aforementioned studios know as Studio 3. This is where Mr. Gibson teaches and small groups are allowed and trusted to work on their own without immediate supervision.

Drama At The Meden School...We want to encourage initiative and thinking ‘on your feet’- both useful and essential pre – requisites if successful drama is to happen! We all teach across K.S.3 and Both Ms. O’ Flynn and Mr. Collard teaches the Edexcel GCSE course to Year 11, two groups having just completed this. We have now, for various reasons changed to the AQA Drama GCSE which is being studied by our current Year 10 group.

There is a drama club run by Ms. O’Flynn which usually, but not always meets on a Monday lunchtime. There is other after school sessions during school production rehearsals and where GCSE work takes place. There are regular theatre trips usually in support of the GCSE syllabi where reviews are an important course component. Normally theses are to Mansfield though sometimes we go to Nottingham. In recent years we have enjoyed examination success with ‘A’ Level Performance Studies and Drama and Theatre Arts but at present we have no takers for these courses which are still on offer!

Drama At The Meden School...

We will be taking part in Mansfield’s ‘Schools in the Streets’ project in the market place during July. There is also an in school Music/ Drama project run by Mr. C .Miles and Ms. O’ Flynn panned for the last week before half term. There is also a wide range of T.I.E. and other drama projects that are brought into school regularly both by us and other curriculum areas…

We shall be looking at a project for the next academic year which may or may not be the ‘traditional’ school production. Watch out for details of all that’s going on in the next (summer 2007) edition of the Expressive Arts magazine.
