History At Meden...
The Department offers a wide range of courses across Key Stages 3, 4 and 5. Those courses are:
Key Stage 3
Year 7: This year’s work focuses on the Middle Ages. Topics include:
- Norman Invasion and the Battle of Hastings – assessment on knowledge
- Castles and Cathedrals – assessment on using sources
- The Black Death and the Peasants’ Revolt – assessment on interpretations
Year 8: This year’s work is focused around two themes (i) revolution (ii) lives of ‘ordinary’ people. Topics include:
- Oliver Cromwell and the Civil War – assessment on interpretations
- French Revolution – assessment on knowledge
- Slavery - assessment on using sources
- Industrial Revolution – working & living conditions

Year 9: This year’s work focuses upon World Wars I & II and a non British/European history. Topics include:
- Trench Warfare (World War I) – assessment on sources
- Adolf Hitler – assessment on interpretations
- The Holocaust – assessment on knowledge
- Native Indians of North America
Key Stage 4
Two courses are offered leading to a G.C.S.E. Modern World Course which looks at history in the C20 – includes topics on:
- Events leading to World Wars I and II
- Britain in the First World War
- The Cold War to 1949
- Germany 1918-1939
- USA 1919 – 1941
Local and Medieval History This course has a vocational dimension. Topics include:
- Local History of Warsop Vale and the coal industry
- Saxon, Viking and Norman Invasions
- The marketing of Robin Hood
- Differing representations of King John
Key Stage 5
- Year 12 examine (i) Irish History C19 (ii) Political career of Robert Peel (iii) Louis XIV’s foreign policy
- Year 13 examine (i) Political careers of Gladstone and Disraeli (ii) the Ascendancy of France 1610-1715 (iii) a free choice subject piece of coursework
