Maths At Meden...
The Department
The department consists of ten maths teachers and one admin assistant. Each teacher has the use of an interactive whiteboard to assist them in the delivery of their lessons. The department promotes a caring environment where we strive to respond to the needs of individual students. There is a strong belief that our pupils are capable, good results can be achieved and that the effectiveness of the department can help bring about that success.
Departmental meetings are held regularly. These are seen not only as an opportunity to give and receive information and discuss the day to day business but as an avenue for sharing resources and good practice. Regular testing is used to inform the teacher, students and parents of the progress made in teaching and learning. Homework is an integral part of our teaching and is set weekly, varying in length and difficulty to suit the age and abilities of the students.
Curriculum
In Years 7 – 11 pupils are set according to ability with learning support given to those pupils with special educational needs.
Key Stage 3
Having been a pilot school for the KS3 Strategy we actively promote the ethos of the National Numeracy Strategy in our teaching across KS3 and into KS4 and KS5. Our main resource at KS3 is Formula One Maths which provides a basis for lesson planning. Staff supplement the courses with their own resources. Schemes of work are updated each year.
Key Stage 4
All KS4 students follow the OCR 1966 Graduated Assessment course. This is a modular course and includes centre-marked coursework. Currently all year 10 and 11 students take GCSE statistics (AQA) along side their maths.
Key Stage 5
We follow the OCR A/S and A level mathematics course with Years 12 and 13. GCSE re-sit classes are run after school.
The school is also involved in national mathematics challenges. Pupils from all years take part either in the Junior or Intermediate Mathematics Challenges. In the past our pupils have obtained Bronze, Silver and Gold awards and gone on to the British Mathematical Olympiad and European Kangaroo.
