Design & Technology At The Meden School...

As a Technology College D&T is a key area of the curriculum.  All pupils follow a course in D&T at both KS3 and KS4 and both expectations and achievement are high.

At KS3 we operate a carousel system.  Each year pupils experience modules in Electronic Products, Food, Graphics, Resistant Materials and Textiles.  On occasions and as the timetable allows we are also able to include modules of Product Design and Manufacturing.  These modules typically each last for approximately 6 weeks/18 lessons.  The majority of the modules follow the traditional ‘design process’ with pupils designing and then making a final outcome however some are more skills based focusing on the development of particular abilities with either equipment, materials or software.

At KS4 we offer a wide range of GCSE courses.  At present we offer GCSE Food and Textiles through the AQA exam board.  Also GCSE Electronics, Graphics, Resistant Materials and Product Design (pilot) through the OCR board.  Finally we offer Applied GCSE Manufacturing through Edexcel.  In addition to these exam courses we deliver various skills based classes to some of our pupils for whom the exam course route is not appropriate.  Achievement at GCSE D&T is good with pupils typically achieving above average grades in their D&T subjects.

We also offer a wide range of courses at KS5.  At present they include Product Design-3D, Product Design-Textiles, Food Technology, Product Design-Graphics and Electronics.  The Electronics course is delivered through the WJEC exam board, the other AS/A2 subjects through AQA.

For the 2007/8 academic year we have a team of thirteen staff, (ten teaching staff and three non teaching).  In addition to this we are often able to offer placements to trainee teachers from various local universities.  The various subject specialisms under the D&T banner all operate as on faculty and staff are able to teach across a number of subject disciplines, particularly at KS3.

We have eleven teaching rooms as well as various other spaces in the faculty.  These rooms include two textiles workshops, two food workshops, two ICT rooms and a graphic suite as well as spaces dedicated to both RM and Electronics.  There is also a sixth form private study area, a CNC suite and a faculty office.  As a Technology College we benefit from a good level of resourcing and are able to ensure we remain at the forefront of D&T education.
