GCSE Design and Technology prepares students to participate confidently and successfully in an increasingly technological world. Students will gain awareness and learn from wider influences on Design and Technology including historical, social, cultural, environmental and economic factors. Students will get the opportunity to work creatively when designing and making and apply their technical and practical expertise. 

This GCSE allows students to study core technical and designing and making principles, including a broad range of design processes, materials techniques and equipment. They will then have the opportunity to study specialist technical principles in the area of Resistant Materials in greater depth.

Additional Information

The course is both theoretical and practical in nature and provides students with knowledge and highly sought-after skills to prepare them for further study, apprenticeships and the workplace.

Assessment

Exam element—one two-hour paper worth 50% of the final grade.

Students will answer a range of both short and extended questions covering a range of topics including technical knowledge in relation to both Resistant Material and the wider world of Design and Technology. The paper will also examine students’ understanding and ability in relation to designing and making principles.

Non-exam assessment—a design and make project worth 50% of the final grade. 

Students will undertake an extended Resistant Materials based project that showcases the skills and knowledge they have developed. The project will be in response to a design brief. Students will develop skills in planning and development, making, testing and evaluation, and communication.
