KS4 Core Computing

All students, in KS4, to have the opportunity to develop creativity, analytical and problem solving skills through the use of Information Technology, as well as understanding how technology supports everyday life and prepares students for the future as well as protecting students online

Students have the opportunity to choose BTEC ICT , GCSE Computer Science, BTEC Creative Media at KS4. If students do not choose one of these as an option then the are able to develop their digital literacy, computational thinking skills and online safety through a range of different subjects across KS4 including; Maths, English, Performing Arts, Science, Technology, Art, Music, PE and Humanities. This is then supported and enriched through the school's Personal Development program, careers sessions and 'Computing Thinking' sessions delivered throughout the year.

All students are taught to:

  • Develop their capability, creativity and knowledge in computer science, digital media and information technology.
  • Develop and apply their analytic, problem solving, design, and computational thinking skills.
  • Understand how changes in technology affect safety, including new ways to protect their online privacy and identity, and how to identify and report a range of concerns.

Analytic skills: Every unit across Y10 and 11 for both Language & Literature supports students' development of analysis. This might be analysing an aspect of Macbeth or An Inspector Calls, or unseen fiction and non-fiction for Language. For instance, the skills assessed for Language include being able to analyse a writer's craft/ purpose.

Design: In English Language students will need to craft a piece of fiction and non-fiction writing including planning. This requires them to create and essentially design the piece, and substantial curriculum time is given to teaching them how to plan, craft and practice writing these skills.

Computational thinking skills: Explicit teaching of step-by-step approaches to planning and writing responses for both Lang/Lit, and these are repeated routinely.

KS4 Computing programmes of study coverage:

  • Develop and apply their analytic, problem solving, design, and computational thinking skills.
